Conspiracies, Crises, and the American Monomyth: Robert Langdon’s Adventures in Books, Films, and the Mini-Series

Over the course of seventeen years, Dan Brown published five novels whose protagonist is Robert Langdon – a Harvard religious symbologist and iconologist. The novels, which belong to the mystery thriller genre and whose constant theme are conspiracy theories, are: Angels & Demons (2000), The Da Vinci Code (2003), The Lost Symbol (2009), Inferno (2013), and Origin (2017). Three of these books – The Da Vinci Code (2006), Angels & Demons (2009), and Inferno (2016) – have been adapted by director Ron Howard into motion pictures with Tom Hanks portraying the protagonist, and in 2022 Amazon Prime released a 10-episode mini-series based on The Lost Symbol where Professor Langdon is played by Ashley Zukerman.

The Robert Langdon stories, in their structural essence, seem to perfectly fit into the narrative structure of the American monomyth, which Robert Jewett and John Shelton Lawrence describe as: “A community in a harmonious paradise is threatened by evil: normal institutions fail to contend with this threat: a selfless superhero emerges to renounce [sexual] temptations and carry out the redemptive task: aided by fate, his decisive victory restores the community to its paradisal condition: the superhero then recedes into obscurity.”

In my presentation, I would like to examine and discuss how the representations of the character of Robert Langdon and his adventures have changed from books to films to mini-series and how those remediated representations fit into the frame of the American monomyth. I would also like to pose a question of whether the example of the adaptations of Dan Brown’s novels and the changes made to the character of Langdon and the narrative structures of his stories signal the crisis of the American monomyth. Ultimately, I would like to reflect on whether there is still room for the American monomyth in contemporary, American popular culture.

To translate or not to translate? Slang and vulgarisms in translation
Watching films and TV series in Polish translation, everyone sometimes wonders why 'the F word' and other such words often disappear in translation. Are translators so polite? Don’t they know how to translate a few vulgarisms? Are there any rules to follow considering this issue? In the workshop we are going to discuss examples of slang and colloquial language expressions from films, TV series and books to show different strategies used in translation. Workshop participants will be able to try their hand and address some problematic English expressions in translation.



Oglądając filmy i seriale w przekładzie na polski każdy chyba zastanawia się, dlaczego często ‘the F word’ i jemu podobne znikają w tłumaczeniu? Czy tłumacze są tacy grzeczni? Czy nie umieją przełożyć kilku wulgaryzmów? Czy są jakieś zasady, których należy przestrzegać w tym temacie? Na warsztacie omówimy przykłady elementów slangu i języka potocznego z filmów, seriali i książek, aby pokazać różne strategie stosowane w przekładzie. Uczestnicy będą mogli spróbować własnych sił i zmierzyć się z problematycznymi wyrażeniami angielskimi w tłumaczeniu.
