Although the period between the First and Second World Wars is known as the Golden Age of Detective Fiction, the genre never lost popularity. Instead, it went through many transformations, adapting to the changing times. One of the more recent examples of detective stories in this tradition is Richard Osman's Thursday Murder Club series. In my short lecture, I will show how Osman interweaves old-school whodunnit style reminiscent of Miss Marple stories with very contemporary themes and why he is so successful at it.

The lecture aims at analyzing three United States-based artists who in their oeuvres used the American flag as a point of departure for contemplation on the current state of the United States of America. The selected works of art have approached the familiar image of the Stars and Stripes in a new and rather controversial way that may suggest that the original associations the flag entailed may have drifted away from the reality. The three works of art employing the American flag that this article analyzes are Dread Scott’s What is the Proper Way to Display a US Flag? from 1989, Barbara Kruger’s untitled (Questions) from 1991 and Sean Scully’s Ghost Gun from 2017.

Culture shock refers to feelings of uncertainty, confusion, or anxiety people may experience when they start living, studying or working in a new country or surroundings. Even though for some it is not easy to adjust to their new country and culture, there are ways to manage and finally overcome it. The workshop will discuss reasons and stages of cultures shock, and some case studies will be analysed. Moreover, the phenomenon of reverse culture shock will be also explained.

This talk is about the sort of messages that people seem happy to walk around parading. There is no greater proof that English is a truly international language, and especially that of young people, than the slogans and messages that people wear on their t-shirts. The presentation will review the kinds of messages people display and point out gender differences which reflects who capitalism targets with its products, where branding fits in and what the process can tell us about youth fashion culture.

Pragmatic competence is extremely important for effective communication, but it takes on particular significance in a situation of so-called intercultural communication, where the participants come from different cultural areas, speak different languages and adhere to different social norms. The ability to interpret the situational context correctly has a great impact on the course of the communicative act, but also on the adaptation of the linguistic strategies required at a given moment. The lecture will briefly present the reasons for communicative failure due to insufficiently developed pragmatic competence and tips for working on its development.
Kompetencja pragmatyczna jest niezmiernie istotna w efektywnej komunikacji, nabiera jednak szczególnego znaczenia w sytuacji tzw komunikacji międzykulturowej, w której jej uczestnicy pochodzą z różnych obszarów kulturowych, posługują się innymi językami i wyznają różne normy społeczne. Umiejętność właściwej interpretacji kontekstu sytuacyjnego ma ogromny wpływ na przebieg aktu komunikacyjnego, lecz również dopasowanie strategii językowych wymaganych w danym momencie. Podczas wykładu zostaną zaprezentowane pokrótce powody niepowodzeń komunikacyjnych wynikających z niewystarczająco rozwiniętej kompetencji pragmatycznej i wskazówki dotyczące pracy nad jej rozwijaniem.

The aim of the lecture is to introduce the attendees to one chosen area of digital game studies and design, namely cut-scenes. We are going to talk about the definition of cut-scenes, their roles in games, the differences between now and the past, and the way they have been perceived so far by both developers and scholars, and how this links to the general understanding of what games are. The lecture is not exactly meant to be a review of cut-scenes and their development in games’ history; rather than that, it is meant to be theory-oriented and introduce the attendees to a more academic perspective on games.

My lecture will focus on Sally Rooney’s hit triptych – Conversations with Friends, Normal People and Beautiful World, Where Are You, with emphasis on the experience of identity formation of her young female protagonists – driven andambitious yet unsure of themselves, frequently neurotic and troubled. My aim is to familiarise the audience with the challenges of becoming a woman by way of showcasing how the young women in the discussed novels battle conventional gender roles, fight for one’s autonomy, and try to secure a place of their own in a society which still fosters stereotypical patriarchal attitudes.

Often when we have conversations with others we tend to be polite, helpful, constructive and likeable. Sometimes, however, we do not. In some situations we are more impolite, argumentative, disruptive and abusive. In this presentation we will cover the topic of swearing and insulting in language. We will talk about why, in what situations, people use this kind of language. Also, we will identify the kinds of words and expressions that people use when they speak dirty. Due to the fact that we can hear this kind of language all around us, we will also discuss what we can do if we find ourselves at the receiving end of verbal abuse in real life and online.

In the workshop I propose a visual guessing game in the form of interpretation of 3/4 images from selected early English manuscripts. The participants will be divided into 3/4 groups and will be encouraged to look for and guess at the representations of royal prestige, power and spiritual devotion. We will look for details, vectoral directions in the images, colour, gesture, repetition, ornament, and the text when part of the image. The assumption behind the workshop is that manuscript images constitute the layer of meaning which not only complements the senses conveyed in texts, but which could provide commanding statements, and, occasionally, coded messages or even visual riddles.

‘You have caused us a lot of joy’. ‘The injury caused him to win the game. ‘I utterly enjoyed her birthday’. ‘This is symptomatic of our success. ‘He committed a great achievement’. Do these sentences sound right to you? If not, what do you think might be wrong with them? How would you correct them if asked to? Mysterious as it may sound, semantic prosody is a phenomenon that speakers and learners of English should easily recognize and intuitively understand, regardless of their language experience. My presentation comes with a short practical workshop as well as an easy-to-understand gist of the theoretical background to the matter. In my talk, I will focus on several English and Polish lexical items and their common usage with a view to showing how meaning operates in language and how it may be interpreted. I will also discuss what it means when a word or phrase is used outside its ‘natural’ context.

The workshop will introduce participants to the phonetics and writing system of the Japanese language, with a particular focus on words borrowed from English. If you know English, can you understand the meaning of these Japanese words? Or are we dealing with pseudo-English borrowings? The aim of the workshop is to familiarise participants with so-called digital body language. We will talk about the role of emojis, memes, and gifs in communication and the reasons why they are now recognised as part of body language and a type of digital non-verbal communication. Participants will take part in my original exercises, which I will carry out with the help of students from my research group. We will focus on the expression of emotions, comparing the generally known vocabulary in both languages with the commonly used (but highly personalised) digital 'pictograms'. Together, we will consider whether the worldwide popularity of emojis, gifs, and memes is indicative of language development or rather of language retardation. The workshop will be held in Polish and English.
Celem warsztatów jest zaznajomienie uczestników z tzw. cyfrową mową ciała. Będziemy rozmawiać o roli emoji, memów oraz gifów w komunikacji oraz o powodach, dla których obecnie są one uznawane za element mowy ciała oraz rodzaj cyfrowej komunikacji niewerbalnej. Uczestnicy wezmą udział w moich autorskich ćwiczeniach, które przeprowadzę z pomocą Studentek z mojej grupy badawczej. Skupimy się na wyrażaniu emocji, porównując ogólnie znane słownictwo w obu językach z powszechnie używanymi (choć mocno spersonalizowanymi) cyfrowymi „piktogramami”. The workshop will familiarise participants with the basic principles of worldbuilding, focusing primarily on speculative fiction. Participants will be introduced to the basic strategies used by creators of fantasy worlds, the most common pitfalls one can fall into during the worldbuilding process, and the details to pay attention to in order to create a fuller, more vivid world. We'll also talk about examples of worlds created (the good ones and the underdeveloped ones), and then participants will be able to try their hand at world-making themselves.
Warsztaty zaznajamiają uczestników z podstawowymi zasadami światotwórstwa, skupiając się przede wszystkim na fikcji spekulatywnej. Uczestnikom zostaną przybliżone podstawowe strategie, jakimi kierują się twórcy światów fantastycznych, najczęstsze pułapki, w które można wpaść w procesie światotwórstwa, a także szczegóły, na które warto zwracać uwagę, by stworzyć pełniejszy, żywszy świat. Porozmawiamy także o przykładach światów stworzonych (tych dobrych i tych niedopracowanych), a później uczestnicy będą mogli sami spróbować swoich sił w tworzeniu światów.

In this workshop, students will learn the stories of several US territories that have never became states. Students will first try to assemble a map of the United States. Then we’ll have a discussion about the shape of selected states and the differences between them. The discussion will highlight some of the processes involved in the formation of new states and explain the main reasons why the shapes of modern states are so varied. Next we’ll move to a presentation of selected proposed states and their histories. We’ll try to answer the question why these proposals failed and hence what makes a successful US State.

What a meme is, everyone can see. We immediately know if it makes us laugh or not. But why do we find some memes funny and others a stretch? What role do they play in culture? Can they be studied and with what tools? You will get answers to these questions in a workshop on applied meme science, which lies at the intersection of linguistics and media studies. The humour in selected memes will be analysed by members of the Doctoral Research Group NEOlinguists.

Depending on the number of people involved, participants will work in pairs or individually on exercises designed for two purposes: first, to generate ideas for stories; and second, to grasp the basics of creating plots, starting with their very fundamentals: genres, protagonists, goals, obstacles, and conflicts. The exercises will involve some freewriting, feedback, and presentation of their ideas and sketches by the workshop’s participants.
