W mediach Brexit często przedstawiany jest jako pojedyncze wydarzenie polityczne. Czy jednak jest to właściwa ocena tego zjawiska? Czy Brexit da się zamknąć w ramach jednego zdarzenia? Co oznacza Brexit dla samych Brytyjczyków i jaki jest jego wpływ na brytyjskie społeczeństwo i kulturę? Podczas tego spotkania postaramy się spojrzeć na Brexit ze społecznej, kulturowej i historycznej perspektywy. Przyjrzymy się również w jaki sposób Brexit przedstawiany jest we współczesnej literaturze brytyjskiej.

Brexit is often discussed in the media as a single political event. Is such an assessment viable and can it be used to understand Brexit and everything it entails? What does Brexit mean to the British people and how does it influence British culture and society? During this lecture we would look at Brexit from social, cultural and historical perspective. We would also focus on the depiction in the contemporary British literature.

The workshop will begin with a viewing of David Foster Wallace’s famous commencement speech “This Is Water”, after which we will jointly try to identify the problems that await contemporary young people at the threshold of adulthood, and consider the advice given by Wallace. We will also make references to how his ideas are explored in his fiction via analyzing the shortest short story in his oeuvre, “A Radically Condensed History of Postindustrial Life.

I am going to demonstrate the process of editing and typesetting a literary work, “The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes”, in the context of COVID-19 pandemic and as part of the teaching process (within English Studies). The steps involved will be shown. The importance of the connection between literary and editorial/publishing worlds will be highlighted. A former discussion of this experiment can be found in my article “Nauczanie literacko-edytorskie zdalnie: analiza przypadku (in Informatyka w edukacji, edukacja informatyczna a rozwój społeczeństwa: kształcenie na odległość, edited by Anna Beata Kwiatkowska and Maciej M. Tak było też z autorem prezentacji, który będzie weryfikował swoje wcześniejsze oczekiwania z własnymi doświadczeniami. Popularna pogadanka-prezentacja, ilustrowana autorskimi zdjęciami, będzie łączyć elementy historii, kultury i języka i przeznaczona jest dla młodzieży uczącej się języka.

Do udziału w spotkaniu wystarczy znajomość języka angielskiego na poziomie B1.

Everyone interested in English-speaking countries has a basic knowledge of Australia and some ideas based on it. This was also the case with the author of this presentation, who will confront his previous expectations with his first hand experiences. This popular talk, illustrated with original photos, will combine images with elements of history, culture and language of Australia, and is intended for teenagers learning English.

The lecture will offer an introductory overview of ways in which American television, scripted and unscripted, coped with the technical and representational challenges posed by COVID-19 in the first year of the pandemic. How did talk shows talk about the pandemic? Which TV series were the first to introduce COVID plotlines? The presentation will also showcase differences and similarities between our current pandemic and HIV pandemic as well as 9/11 as mediated events, as well as discuss affective dimensions of their representations.

Dr Dorota Guttfeld teaches audiovisual translation to English philology students at the Nicolaus Copernicus University; dr Dariya Khokhel is a practicing subtitle translator into Ukrainian and Russian. We will show you how vastly different activities and workflows can be contained under the umbrella term of ‘subtitling’ (working from audio, from CCSLs or from templates), how the norms and guidelines are evolving, and what is prioritized in different situations when the translation cannot be perfect. We will answer your questions about subtitling and, time permitting, subtitle a short clip online, testing your suggestions in practice.

The lecture will offer an overview of characteristic features of digital game texts and the way they affect players and their emotions. What can games do that other culture texts cannot? How do fantasy games or horror games differ from literature or film texts of the same genres? The presentation will include a number of examples which will serve to illustrate the diversity of ways in which games can express and conceptualize experiences and ideas.

The evening with games will allow students to see and understand how language evolution works. We will present hypotheses from recent research in anthropological linguistics and discuss them based on a series of well-known games such as charades or one word. Additionally, we will show the students around the lab and tell them about contemporary methods used in experimental linguistic research - they will have a chance to see MoCap suits by Rokoko as well as see and calibrate the EyeLink1000 eye tracking system.
