Walking down the street and sighting English in signage for businesses, English grafetti on walls and English words mixed on flyers or other public notices, the observer has to conclude it's an intentional act in a non-native English speaking environment. Why would this choice be made? What is the intent of the author? If we can agree that the purpose of art is to provoke an emotion or mood, it's not incorrect to assume the authors of this public English are also trying to provoke the observer into another frame of mind. Consequently, this English takes on the attributes of art in public places or is it in fact art on its own?
If you live in a predominantly English speaking world, the use of a language other than English, for example, Japanese, may be intended to provoke some kind of stereotypical exotiscisim in the observer, but the effectiveness of that usage is heavily reliant on the pervasiveness of that stereotype. This also applies to the use of English in non-native environments. So, what are the stereotypes behind the use of incidental English in non-native environments? And what feelings and emotions is this usage provoking? Furthermore, how similar is the reaction between native and non-native speakers when encountering these words in the wild?
As an English bridge person and native-speaker, Beth Barry has lived and travelled in predominantly non-native speaking environments for most of her life. As an educator and performing artist she has always been fascinated at the use of English in non-native environments and how that usage is perceived by the non-native speaker. In this video, she takes a documentary approach to exploring the public use of English in the wild of Krakow, Poland, her current home.

The language of heraldry is one of the most intricate and peculiar specialized languages. As such, it poses great difficulties for translators and this is especially so in the Polish-English language pair, because of the fact these languages are carriers of very different heraldic traditions. Event description: After the Second World War, a bipolar division of the world took shape, with the democratic states led by the USA on one side and the countries remaining in the USSR's sphere of influence on the other. This period was characterised by a fierce rivalry between the two blocs predominantly on economic, ideological, cultural and military levels. A latter manifestation of this confrontation was the involvement of America in the Vietnam conflict. Contextualising the Vietnam War puts those events into historical perspective. It is supplemeted with demonstrations of authentic pieces of weaponry of US soldiers fighting in Vietnam (weapons, uniforms, etc.).

Po drugiej wojnie światowej ukształtował się dwubiegunowy podział świata, gdzie po jednej stronie znalazły się państwa demokratyczne pod przywództwem USA, zaś po drugiej kraje pozostające w strefie wpływów ZSSR. Okres ten charakteryzował się rywalizacją miedzy dwoma blokami na polu ekonomicznym, ideologicznym, kulturowym i militarnym. Jednym z przejawów tej rywalizacji było zaangażowanie się USA w konflikt wietnamski. Prezentacja Contextualising the Vietnam War osadza tamte wydarzenia w perspektywie historycznej. Została wzbogacona o demonstracje autentycznych elementów uzbrojenia amerykańskich żołnierzy walczących w Wietnamie (broń, umundurowanie, itp.).

Everyone complains about English spelling, especially about its inconsistency with pronunciation. We will investigate whether this is entirely true. Maybe you can predict the correct pronunciation of basic words? Maybe it is possible to make our English more pleasant and understandable to the interlocutor's ear?

Wikipedię, czyli ogólnie dostępną encyklopedię internetową znają wszyscy, często korzystając z jej wielojęzycznych wersji. Jednak jak wiarygodne są tłumaczenia artykułów w Wikipedii i kto tak naprawdę je tworzy? Podczas warsztatów uczestnicy zapoznają się zarówno z formalnymi zasadami tworzenia, modyfikacji i tłumaczenia stron w Wikipedii, jak również z możliwościami technologicznymi tworzenia wielojęzycznych artykułów, oferowanymi przez portal (narzędzie Content Translation), a następnie spróbują samodzielnie przetłumaczyć fragmenty wybranych artykułów z języka polskiego na angielski w środowisku Wikipedii.

Who translates Wikipedia and how is it done?
Everybody knows and uses Wikipedia, i.e. globally accessible online encyclopaedia, available in multilingual versions. But how reliable are translations of Wikipedia articles and who actually creates them? During the workshop, participants will be introduced to both the formal rules for writing, publishing, modifying and translating Wikipedia pages, as well as the technological features offered by the portal for creating multilingual articles (the Content Translation tool). Next, they will take a hands-on approach to translating fragments of selected articles from Polish into English in the Wikipedia online environment.

Jak przetłumaczyć uczucie, jeśli ma ono ponad dwieście lat? To pytanie jest w centrum warsztatu, na którym pochylimy się nad językowo niezwykłym dokumentem: fragmentem listu Tadeusza Kościuszki, napisanym angielszczyzną, jaką się posługiwał. Szczególną trudność sprawiają tu słowa będące nazwami uczuć i emocji, bo są one zawsze obciążone ładunkiem wartości. List autorstwa bohatera historii Polski i Stanów Zjednoczonych wymaga też troski tłumacza dlatego właśnie, że to wgląd w życie wybitnej postaci. Zapraszam osoby zainteresowane przekładem trudnych tekstów. (Warsztat odbędzie się w języku polskim i angielskim.)


Title: How to translate a feeling? A two-hunderd-year-old letter

Description of the event: How to translate a feeling if it is more than two hundred years old? This question is at the centre of this workshop, which will focus on a linguistically unusual document: a fragment of Tadeusz Kościuszko's letter, written in the English he used. The words that are names of feelings and emotions pose a particular difficulty in this case because they are always loaded with values. The letter written by a hero of the history of Poland and the United States also requires the translator’s special care precisely because it offers an insight into the life of an outstanding figure. If you are interested in translating difficult texts, you are very welcome.
