Literary adaptation has taken place across all periods of history. Contemporary phenomena, such as the Harry Potter ‘craze’ or fan-fiction sites, have revealed the extent to which readers imaginatively immerse themselves in the fiction they read, bringing it into new life with sequels, rewrites, and in some cases merchandise. Academic research has by now established quite how dynamic literary adaptation was throughout the 18th century, as the reception of Gulliver’s Travels and numerous Robinsonades demonstrate. Nevertheless, the work of Laurence Sterne (1713-1768) experienced ‘afterlife’ in more extensive and imaginative ways than that of any of his contemporaries.

Why are many English language learners so eager to have classes with a native speaker? Is it really the case that a native speaker is the best teacher we can think of? During the lecture we will look at who speaks English in today's world, who they speak to most often and what we should consider when looking for the right teacher for us. In addition, we will consider who a native speaker really is and learn what discrimination against non-native English teachers is and what tools we have to tackle it.
Dlaczego wiele osób uczących się języka angielskiego tak bardzo chce mieć zajęcia z native speakerem? Czy rzeczywiście jest tak, że native speaker jest najlepszym nauczycielem, jakiego możemy sobie wymarzyć? Podczas wykładu przyjrzymy się temu, kto mówi po angielsku w dzisiejszym świecie, z kim najczęściej rozmawia oraz na co powinniśmy zwrócić uwagę, szukając dla siebie odpowiedniego nauczyciela. Dodatkowo zastanowimy się, kim tak naprawdę jest native speaker oraz dowiemy się, czym jest dyskryminacja nierodzimych nauczycieli języka angielskiego i jakie mamy narzędzia, żeby jej przeciwdziałać.

Representatives of various communities and professional groups co-creating our institute will take part in a debate to reflect together on the diversity of functions that English language may have in our professional, social and personal lives. We intend to share our experiences shaped by the everyday reality of a place where English is an object of studies; a means of communication; a resource granting access to texts of culture and academic literature; a teaching language; and finally a source of entertainment and pleasure. In the course of our discussion, we will use our practical experiences to compose a survey of various applications of and approaches to English, as well as the professional, social and cultural opportunities that it creates. As an institution striving to shape language competences close to those of a native speaker, the Institute of English Studies creates a particularly vibrant and relevant environment for this kind of reflection.

Prof. Michał Choiński, Fulbright Fellow at Yale University, will present selected items in the collection of Beinecke Rare Manuscript Library, one of the most interesting libraries in the US. The collection holds such manuscripts as the Gutenberg Bible, the mysterious 15th century Voynich manuscript, as well as a wide selection of private letters and notes of American writers. In his short video, Prof. Choiński will demonstrate how one works with literary documents, and what knowledge about US literature and culture can be derived from them.

Although the period between the First and Second World Wars is known as the Golden Age of Detective Fiction, the genre never lost popularity. Instead, it went through many transformations, adapting to the changing times. One of the more recent examples of detective stories in this tradition is Richard Osman's Thursday Murder Club series. In my short lecture, I will show how Osman interweaves old-school whodunnit style reminiscent of Miss Marple stories with very contemporary themes and why he is so successful at it.

The lecture aims at analyzing three United States-based artists who in their oeuvres used the American flag as a point of departure for contemplation on the current state of the United States of America. The selected works of art have approached the familiar image of the Stars and Stripes in a new and rather controversial way that may suggest that the original associations the flag entailed may have drifted away from the reality. The three works of art employing the American flag that this article analyzes are Dread Scott’s What is the Proper Way to Display a US Flag? from 1989, Barbara Kruger’s untitled (Questions) from 1991 and Sean Scully’s Ghost Gun from 2017.

An attempt to reveal the evolution of worldview in the minds of British and Irish Celts, as they were gradually adopting christian beliefs and culture. By the examples of new mythological motifs and symbols in the legends, I will try and reveal the contrasts between pre-christian triads of goddesses and the newly invented ones, their different features and attributes along with the changes regarding concepts of life and death in celtic culture.

The presentation is designed to focus on female and male stereotypes contained in the messages of proverbs from different cultures of the world. Without doubt proverbs about women constitute the main subject of numerous proverbs, regrettably of negatively-coloured perception (e.g. When woman gets off the wagon, horses have easier work, as the American-English proverb says or Baba z wozu, koniom lżej, according to a Polish proverb). On close inquiry, however, one can find categories of proverbs which value women positively, for example the category of mother (as in e.g. God couldn’t be everywhere, therefore He made mothers). In turn, the male sex appears much less frequently in proverbs and when it does, it is mostly of positive stereotyping (e.g. A man of straw is better than a woman of gold). As a result of women’s liberation movement traditional gender roles are challenged, what is reflected in modern proverbs and anti-proverbs (e.g. A career girl would rather bring home the bacon than fry it, as the American-English proverb conveys).

Walking down the street and sighting English in signage for businesses, English grafetti on walls and English words mixed on flyers or other public notices, the observer has to conclude it's an intentional act in a non-native English speaking environment. Why would this choice be made? What is the intent of the author? If we can agree that the purpose of art is to provoke an emotion or mood, it's not incorrect to assume the authors of this public English are also trying to provoke the observer into another frame of mind. Consequently, this English takes on the attributes of art in public places or is it in fact art on its own?
If you live in a predominantly English speaking world, the use of a language other than English, for example, Japanese, may be intended to provoke some kind of stereotypical exotiscisim in the observer, but the effectiveness of that usage is heavily reliant on the pervasiveness of that stereotype. This also applies to the use of English in non-native environments. So, what are the stereotypes behind the use of incidental English in non-native environments? And what feelings and emotions is this usage provoking? Furthermore, how similar is the reaction between native and non-native speakers when encountering these words in the wild?
As an English bridge person and native-speaker, Beth Barry has lived and travelled in predominantly non-native speaking environments for most of her life. As an educator and performing artist she has always been fascinated at the use of English in non-native environments and how that usage is perceived by the non-native speaker. In this video, she takes a documentary approach to exploring the public use of English in the wild of Krakow, Poland, her current home.

Event description: After the Second World War, a bipolar division of the world took shape, with the democratic states led by the USA on one side and the countries remaining in the USSR's sphere of influence on the other. This period was characterised by a fierce rivalry between the two blocs predominantly on economic, ideological, cultural and military levels. A latter manifestation of this confrontation was the involvement of America in the Vietnam conflict. Contextualising the Vietnam War puts those events into historical perspective. It is supplemeted with demonstrations of authentic pieces of weaponry of US soldiers fighting in Vietnam (weapons, uniforms, etc.).
Po drugiej wojnie światowej ukształtował się dwubiegunowy podział świata, gdzie po jednej stronie znalazły się państwa demokratyczne pod przywództwem USA, zaś po drugiej kraje pozostające w strefie wpływów ZSSR. Okres ten charakteryzował się rywalizacją miedzy dwoma blokami na polu ekonomicznym, ideologicznym, kulturowym i militarnym. Jednym z przejawów tej rywalizacji było zaangażowanie się USA w konflikt wietnamski. Prezentacja Contextualising the Vietnam War osadza tamte wydarzenia w perspektywie historycznej. Została wzbogacona o demonstracje autentycznych elementów uzbrojenia amerykańskich żołnierzy walczących w Wietnamie (broń, umundurowanie, itp.).

Culture shock refers to feelings of uncertainty, confusion, or anxiety people may experience when they start living, studying or working in a new country or surroundings. Even though for some it is not easy to adjust to their new country and culture, there are ways to manage and finally overcome it. We are going to discuss the author’s life, literary output, and the sources of inspiration, as well as some of the defining moments in his life, especially the years of addiction to alcohol and drugs. We will consider how those experiences influenced the master storyteller’s creative process, as well as how they shaped him as a man and a writer. In our considerations, we will pay particular attention to the theme of addiction in the novels of the first decade of his literary career.

Even cinematic laymen can recognize his odd style, so peculiar yet difficult to define. During this workshop I will introduce you to the most important elements present in all of Burton’s work. We will show you how vastly different activities and workflows can be contained under the umbrella term of ‘subtitling’ (working from audio, from CCSLs or from templates), how the norms and guidelines are evolving, and what is prioritized in different situations when the translation cannot be perfect. Welcome to the second edition of IFAdventure, a digital scavenger hunt. We have already set out the stations on the Internet, so you can play without leaving your home. This time the game will start in New York, where the protagonist is looking back at her childhood days filled with ghost stories. After her mother’s death, nightmares come. The search for answers leads her to Wrocław of the 70s, where… …you’ve guessed it… …the Institute where people talk with ghosts is already operating.
An Internet scavenger hunt. A text-based game enhanced with videos will be published on a website designed specifically for this purpose. Solving the riddles will allow the players to move to later chapters and, finally, to solve the mystery.

Martin will also tell the story of the Christmas cracker and pass on the secrets of a what makes a good Christmas cracker (revealed to him by his aunt who, for many years, was an ace Christmas cracker maker).
This is a practical session, so please wear casual work-a-day clothes.

In our talk, we will first introduce the topic of emotions and feelings in language learning and teaching, and then, we will then delve into the effects of the ‘affective turn’ in second language education. In the second part of the presentation, we will present the research results concerning emotions and language teaching to students with different cognitive profile, including students with dyslexia and ADHD. Wagon Train był inspiracją dla Gene Roddenberry'ego, twórcy franczyzy Star Trek. Można nawet powiedzieć, że chodziło o przeniesienie historii Dzikiego Zachodu w kosmos, gdyż kosmos miał być w latach sześćdziesiątych nowym amerykańskim pograniczem, terenem ekspansji, ziemią obiecaną. The Russian invasion of Ukraine resulted in an inflow of refugees into Poland on a scale unprecedented in the country’s history. In a stark contrast to the way the crisis at the border with Belarus was handled in the autumn of 2021, Poland opened its borders. Yet, it has often been the case in European history that merely calling a refugee “an economic migrant” resulted in their right to seek help being immediately questioned. It is because the language we use not only reflects but also shapes our perception of reality. This talk focuses on the image of immigrants and refugees linguistically constructed in American magazines between 1810 and 1950. It will look at the evolution of the two concepts over time and their relationship to the then socio-historical context.

Sequoyah’s Cherokee syllabary is probably the most well-known writing system invented by and for the Indigenous Peoples of North America. In this presentation we first give an overview of the history of the Cherokees and their language, a Southern Iroquoian language that like many languages of North America has a complex word structure. Then we look at the syllabary itself, and the ways in which its symbols are used to represent syllables. Finally, we show how the syllabary has contributed to a sense of national identity among the Cherokees and to the prestige of their language, and how it is now used in their traditional homeland in the southern Appalachia and in Oklahoma, as well as e.g., in contemporary American art.

The 21st century has witnessed a revival of European nationalism. Its supporters often reach for the trope of past ethnic purity. In the British context this involves the 19th century idea of the Englishness of the Anglo-Saxon period. The aim of this talk is to show how Anglo-Saxon England was neither ethnically pure nor white. We will begin by tracing the roots of these ideas to the Victorian period, explaining how and why they found fertile ground in the heyday of the British Empire. Then, we will discuss linguistic, historical, archaeological, and genetic evidence for the complex nature of the post-Roman and pre-Norman Conquest population of England.

The Irish National Theatre, also known as the Abbey, was founded by various writers and patrons during the Irish Literary Revival, at a time when Ireland had yet to regain political independence. First, this lecture provides a brief narrative of the Abbey’s founding and early years, focusing upon a form prominent in its first decades: namely, the short, one-act play. Flashing forward several decades, one then looks to the Abbey’s subsequent evolution in the Republic of Ireland, on the example of a lesser-known playwright: Teresa Deevy, whose The King of Spain’s Daughter was first produced by the Abbey in 1935.

You probably read Joseph Conrad’s Heart of Darkness – or did you? It was translated into Polish many times and in very different ways. However, all those translations are supposed to reflect the same original novel. So – which Heart of Darkness did you read?
We are going to focus on Conrad’s famous book using it as an example to explore more general questions about literary translation. Can a translator modify the text? Does a story change its meaning with time? Are original texts and their translations the same? What is a translation series? If you want to get a glimpse of the challenges posed by translating literature and know more about what a translated book really is – don’t miss this lecture!

Zombies are amongst us, so claims American television. The popularity of zombie movies and TV series testifies to the 21st-century “zombie renaissance.” The status of “the living dead,” in both literature and popular culture, has been changing in the Western world over the last century. It is with such TV series as Walking Dead, i-Zombie and Santa Clarita Diet that they have attained celebrity status in popular culture. It is my intention to examine how the undead have been mainstreamed in i-Zombie (2015-2019) and made less threatening through their culinary choices. After all, what you eat, or who you eat, is who you are.

This lecture will be about the function of landscape in literature. We will talk about the functions of a landscape in a text, how it is presented by artists, how it can be understood, what is the meaning of literary texts, etc. in the characters' lives. The lecture will be based on British / American literature. Together we will try to concentrate on some short texts/ descriptions of landscapes and imagination of feelings. This knowledge will develop our imagination, not only in the aspect of literature, but also in real life.

Radio drama or audio theatre are just two of many names for telling stories by sound only. And for a story to be told one usually needs a narrator that would lead the way through the events and plot twists. This interactive lecture aims to present examples of stories in which the position of the narrator is rather untypical and thus invites listeners to join the characters on equally untypical audio journeys for those who like having their ears open.

Our research team is interested in the analysis of harmonious interspecies relationships in literature, film, and performance involving both animals and humans. We assume that such figurations inform us about the desired human-animal relations in a given time and space. They also provide us with an insight into broader discourses that shape culture and social life due to the fact that animal characters are often used as metaphorical representations of human traits. We would like to present to you the individual work of our team members.
Justyna Włodarczyk and Julia Wilde will tell you why in so many literary and film stories about the adventures of kids and their pets the animal dies as the story reaches its climax. They will also explain how innocent boy-and-his-dog stories were used in the first half of the 20th century as vehicles for eugenics - a pseudoscience about racial differences.
Justyna Włodarczyk and Joanna Ziarkowska will talk about how the books about crossbreeding dogs and wolves from the first decades of the 20th century (by Jack London and James Oliver Curwood) can be useful for understanding the popular perception of the racial differences in the USA.
Jack Harrison and Sara Kruszona will talk about the role of the music in contemporary performances involving humans and animals. Specifically: about frisbee competitions, heelwork to music, and dressage competitions.
