Everyone uses a word processor, which allows you to check statistics such as the number of paragraphs, words, or letters, as well as search for specific words and phrases. This makes it possible to conduct a basic study, but linguists know better ways to analyse written language. In my workshop, I will go over the fundamentals of the free programme "AntConc" which can do much more than a simple word processor.

Literary inspirations behind Jane Austen’s novels have long attracted critical attention. As Virginia Woolf put it, “Jane Austen should have laid a wreath upon the grave of Fanny Burney”. No wonder scholars have painstakingly unearthed several overlaps between these two authors’ works. As far as we know, the two writers never met, yet – to paraphrase Sense and Sensibility’s Lucy Steele – “the time may come … when they may be very intimately connected”. According to recent theories, it would seem that this time has come and that the two novelists may indeed be intimately connected. It is on this more obscure side of the Austen-Burney tandem that I wish to focus in my presentation.

My presentation focuses on the Irish-British relations from 1536 to 1691. This is the period when the formerly Gaelic population became subordinate to the government in London. The majority of Irish society was transformed from a clan-based Gaelic structure to a centrally governed anglicised society. Although from 1541 Ireland was formally a Tudor kingdom, and from 1603 it was one of the three kingdoms under the Stuart monarchs, the country was brutally conquered and colonised by the turn of the 18th century. This process is known as the Plantations of Ireland. They were fuelled by the confessional conflicts between the British Protestants and the Irish Catholics and strengthened religious animosity, which continued in Ulster, one of Irish provinces, until the turn of the 21st century.

The Diary of Samuel Pepys is a record of the author's life from 1660-1669 and covers a wide array of significant events for the history of London and England. Pepys's Diary, however, is not only an account of a witness of political and social events happening in Stuart England but also an extremely colourful illustration of the culinary habits and traditions of Pepys' contemporaries. The presentation looks at Pepys' work as a peculiar compendium of knowledge about the English culinary tradition, its richness and diversity. It also discusses Pepys' Diary in the context of the relationship between the development of his professional career and the evolution of the culinary and social sphere of his life. The third perspective is an attempt to understand Pepys' individual approach to the activity of eating and drinking as an escapist philosophy which helps to forget about the difficult and dangerous reality in which the author of the Diary lived.

We are all familiar with the series ‘The Crown' produced by the Netflix platform, which is currently breaking records in popularity. A few days after the death of Elizabeth II, its viewership increased by 800%. But do we realise how often, how readily and for how long popular culture and literature have used references to the life and reign of Queen Elizabeth II? After all, she appears in Winnie the Pooh stories, punk music, 'Minions' or in American pop art paintings. Together we will try to discover the most surprising uses of the Queen's image in mass culture.

Have you ever watched the Greenbook movie? Have you ever wondered if traveling in the USA was once a safe thing? It was not always like that. In the history of this country, there were cities that were hostile to people of colour, immigrants. They were called as “sundown towns”. However, thanks to Greenbooks - special guides for motorists, people travelled safely and could make themselves at home!

Netflix occupies the 3rd place on the list of the most popular streaming platforms in 2022. While its main objective is to provide entertainment, there are also adaptations of some classic novels you may find on your obligatory reading list. During our workshops we will focus on three movies based upon Jane Austen’s novels: Sense and Sensibility (1995), Emma (2020), and Persuasion (2022).We will start from a brief survey of the major models of film adaptation theoryand then our aim will be to discuss which of them is operative in a given movie.Hopefully, you’ll see that classics are not that boring and, maybe, adaptation theory is a decent choice for your future thesis methodology?

Have you ever wondered how many words you need to know to speak English fluently? How much time and how many "boring" repetitions would it take to learn them? To answer these questions, we will look at how many times our brain needs to hear a word before it remembers it and how machine learning can help. You will do some language drills and learn reading strategies that will help read and speak more quickly and fluently. Repetition can be both useful and funny, as you'll see. You will also get to enjoy the fun parts of learning a language.

This presentation consists of two parts.First, it offers an account on the structure and functionalities of the corpus language analysis. Participants will be introduced to both grammatical and lexical (cultural) aspects of computer text analysis. Special attention is paid to the Corpus of Contemporary American English and theCorpus of Historical American English. This methodological introduction is followed with a closer look at some seemingly ungrammatical grammar forms used in English such as he/she/it + do not, you is/was + adjectives and the use of past forms in perfect tenses. The grammaticality of such forms are discussed with reference to the concepts of descriptive and prescriptive attitudes towards language use.
